The short answer
Cabinets warp and swell in Bellingham kitchens because our marine climate keeps indoor humidity high for much of the year, and a lot of local homes have a weak kitchen exhaust fan or none at all. Particleboard boxes swell at the toe-kick and around the sink, MDF doors blister, solid-wood doors move with the seasons, and laminate edges peel where steam collects. The fix is to spec moisture-resistant plywood boxes, stable door materials, and hardware built for a damp kitchen.
Why Bellingham is hard on cabinets
Three things stack up here. First, the wet season runs long and indoor humidity stays high, so the air in your kitchen holds more moisture than it would in a dry climate. Second, a lot of Bellingham's housing stock is older, and many kitchens were built with a token exhaust fan that barely moves air, so steam from cooking and dishwashing lingers. Third, near the water and out at the lakes and cabins, the humidity is higher still and swings with the seasons.
Cabinets are mostly wood and wood-based materials, and those materials move with moisture. Give them years of high humidity and poor ventilation and the cheap ones fail in predictable places.
Where it shows up
- The toe-kick and sink base. Particleboard wicks up moisture from the floor and from sink leaks, swelling at the bottom edges first.
- MDF doors. Medium-density fiberboard can blister and swell at the edges and around the panel in a steamy kitchen.
- Solid-wood doors. Real wood moves with humidity, so doors can cup, bow, or develop gaps at the joints as the seasons change, especially in cabins that sit damp half the year.
- Laminate edges. Steam collects at door and counter edges and lifts the laminate over time.
How to spec against it
You cannot change Bellingham's weather, but you can build for it. Here is what we spec on a kitchen meant to last here:
- Moisture-resistant plywood boxes. Plywood is far more dimensionally stable than particleboard and resists swelling, which is why we use it as the default here.
- Smart door material. Stable engineered or quality solid-wood doors, chosen for how they behave with humidity rather than just how they look on a showroom floor.
- Sealed edges and backs. Properly finished edges and box backs keep moisture from wicking in where it is not seen.
- Hardware that survives damp. Soft-close hinges and slides rated to hold up rather than rust or stick.
- A real exhaust fan. If your kitchen vents poorly, improving ventilation protects whatever cabinets you install.
Lakefront and cabin kitchens
Out at Lake Whatcom and Sudden Valley, the moisture problem is bigger. Cabins often sit cold and damp for stretches, then warm and dry, and that swing is exactly what moves solid wood. For lake homes we plan for that movement instead of pretending wood holds still: stable box construction, materials chosen for humidity swings, and hardware that tolerates damp.
The payoff is a kitchen that still looks right after a few wet Bellingham winters, not one that is peeling at the toe-kick and swelling around the sink. Specing for moisture costs a little more up front and saves the whole kitchen down the line.
